Blue Cross of CA solicited data from MDs to cancel insurance policies

The LA Times is reporting that BCBS has stopped sending out patient data and letters to doctors in an attempt to find ways to cancel their patients’ health insurance.

Overlooking the obvious lapse in medical ethics, is this even legal?

Misadventures in “Security”

Security is a myth. Before 2001, it was a self-delusion here in the US. Since then, our government has reorganized over a hundred agencies under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, suspended habeus corpus, created secret military tribunals, ignored the secret FISA court which oversees such supra-constitutional activity, and… well the list goes on.

“This is the [US] border, and you have no rights.”

Please, tell me this isn’t true.

It used to be a common saying, “If (insert nonsense here), the terrorists have won!” For instance, If I can’t go on vacation, the terrorists have won! If I can’t have a half-caf latté, the terrorists have won!

This news, if true, is what they wanted all along. Our freedom. All it took was a couple dozen madmen, some time and money to prepare, and a sunny, tragic September morning. Osama bin Laden didn’t have to do anything else—we did the rest.

I hope this isn’t true.

Update 2/11/08- CNN is reporting a lawsuit has been filed in one case of repeated laptop searches. In it, Russ Knocke, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, says, “This is the kind of scrutiny the American public expects.”
