Link: Pluto is demoted to a “dwarf planet.” The backlash begins.

The New Solar System

It seemed unavoidable. The media covered it extensively. We now have eight “classic planets” and four “dwarf planets.” But the BBC is reporting that politics, not science, was behind the historic decision. And, the definition itself is flawed. Anybody want a “Honk if Pluto is a Planet” bumper sticker? No kidding!

The report mentions that, of all the astronomers attending the meeting in Prague, only 10% voted on that final day when the new rules were adopted. That number represents 4% of all astronomers worldwide. Perhaps some quorum rules should have been in place before making new, self-contradictory rules about what constitutes a planet? It sounds that way to me.
