Observation Log 4/30/06: Comet Schwassman-Wachman (73P)

April 30, 2006

Comet Schwassman-Wachman (73P) My first look was a bit of a disappointment, since my Oberwerk 11×70 binoculars just didn’t collect enough light. So, tonight I got out my Celestron NexStar 8i telescope and my 2″ Naglers for a better look.

A fine Sunday in the high 60s, sunny, and maybe a bit on the breezy side. Out to Concord and back with Dad. Plus, I have a confession.

Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (73P): News, Links, and Resources

April 27, 2006

Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 (73P) is visible from the northern hemisphere, but we have little more time to enjoy it (unless you don’t mind stargazing between midnight and 4AM!) I’ve collected some links and pictures to help plan your viewing, or just enjoy some nice pictures from pro astronomers.

Oh, and just to be clear: contrary to rumors on the internet, this comet and the many pieces that are breaking off as it disintegrates will not hit our planet. If we are very fortunate, we might get a beautiful meteor shower, but it is too early to tell. This comet presents no danger to us.

I thought I could sneak in 20+ miles before the rain rolled in, but the skies turned dark fast.

Observation Log 4/20/06: Comet Schwassman-Wachman (73P)

April 20, 2006

Comet Schwassman-Wachman (73P) It’s up there, but if I didn’t already know where to look with my Oberwerk 11×70 binoculars… forget it.

According to this Sky and Telescope article, I was seeing Fragment C. Admittedly my eyes weren’t well dark-adapted, having been inside the house to get my binocular setup, but still, it was just a faint fuzzy barely visible with averted vision. I wasn’t even positive I’d seen anything until I came back indoors and compared what I’d seen with the context offered by Starry Night. Even so, the comet won’t be up for much longer, so I’m glad I grabbed a few photons!

A deceptively simple, wickedly funny, tour de force: Contemporary Clichés

April 19, 2006

This has it all: a heady mix of intellectualism & colloquialism that will appeal to the serious scholar and general reader alike, and has edgy written all over it.

2006- Ride #2 24.0 miles, 43.4 total. And I just beat the rain home.

April 18, 2006

A solo ride today. I needed to get outdoors and get some perspective on what looked like pending bad news. I got home, spent, and got the bad news. Still in all, life is good.
